Yi-Yun Loei

Harpist

Yi-Yun Loei is the first Australian harpist to receive a doctorate degree. With solo performances across six continents, Yi-Yun’s performances have taken her far beyond her hometown in Perth. Highlights include the Rio Harp Festival in Brazil, Milan World Expo, Hong Kong International Arts Festival, National Harp Festival of South Africa, and Aspen Music Festival in USA.

Yi-Yun has held Principal Harp positions for the Brno National Theatre Orchestra and the Zlín Philharmonic Orchestra in Czech Republic. While living in China, she was in high demand as guest harpist in major orchestras, performing regularly with the National Centre of Performing Arts Orchestra in Beijing, Qingdao Symphony Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, Kunming International Philharmonic Orchestra and Macao Orchestra. Closer to home, Yi-Yun has performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, and Opera Australia Orchestra.

Yi-Yun is also an avid harp teacher. She served as Adjunct Associate Professor of Music in Zunyi Normal University in China, Acting Program Coordinator for Indiana University’s Pre-College Harp Program in the USA, and Harp Tutor for the Australian Youth Orchestra. She currently runs a private studio in Perth and teaches at UWA.

Yi-Yun was awarded the Subject Exhibition prize in music upon completing Year 12. She received a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts from UWA and was awarded the Lady Callaway medal as the most outstanding music graduate. She subsequently earned an Artist Diploma, Master of Music, and Doctor of Music from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where she held Associate Instructor positions for both harp and music theory. Yi-Yun recently completed a Juris Doctor with distinction and graduated as valedictorian from UWA Law School in 2024.
