The MetSO
The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, established in 1977 as the Karrinyup Symphony, is a widely respected City of Stirling performing arts group and one of Australia’s leading community orchestras. The MetSO is honoured to have the vice-regal patronage of the Governor of Western Australia, which gives distinguished recognition to its commitment to service and excellence.
MetSO has been home to many generations of West Australians, growing from small roots to five ensembles that provide comprehensive music activities for people of all ages.. Our orchestras rehearse weekly and deliver 15-20 concerts a year, ranging from Children’s Book Week to premier MetSO Young Artist events. All our activities are designed to be inclusive and accessible. Over the years we have partnered with many community groups, schools and charities.
Our world class MetSO Young Artist (MYA) Program provides WA musicians with unique performance opportunities and an international presence. The program has helped many local artists to build successful international careers including Taryn Fiebig, David Helfgott, Christopher Dragon and Jessica Gethin. Our MYA alumni return to give back to MetSO and to the WA community. This program also supports local composers to present new West Australian works.
MetSO Outreach aims to improve youth engagement in music, providing teaching, instruments, scholarships, networking and volunteering opportunities, as well as free access to live concerts.
In MetSO’s early years we were partnered with mental health organisation GROW Australia. Today, through our partnership with Act-Belong-Commit, we remain committed to promoting mental wellbeing and the many health benefits of participating in community arts.
The MetSO is a not-for-profit registered charity with Deductible Gift Recipient status.
