Nothing stops the music.

What instrument do you play with the MetSO?

Double bass

Why do you play the Double bass?

I fell in love with it at 12 years of age, when it was reasonable to expect I was going to keep growing.

Do you play any other instruments?

I muck around on the piano for a bit of a laugh.

What instrument(s) would you secretly like to play?

Oboe – I love the sound and I’m sure it would be a lot easier to get in and out of the car.

How many years have you played with MetSO?

About 5. I lived in Melbourne for 11 years and played with a couple of community orchestras there, and joined MetSO not long after moving back to Perth.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a property underwriter for an insurance company. In a nutshell my job is to negotiate premiums and conditions with insurance brokers.

Favourite Symphonies

Line-ball call between Mahler 6 and Beethoven 9

Favourite Concerto?

Not that there aren’t any good double bass concerti, but I have to say Beethoven’s violin concerto.
It always makes me think of the master at work!
Playing it with MetSO with Ronald Thomas as conductor and soloist a few years back was lovely.

Favourite Australian Composers?

Almost too many to mention but I’ll give it a go…
Ross Edwards,
Graeme Koehne,
Elena Kats-Chernin are among them

Most memorable MetSO moment?

I thought I remembered the lights going out briefly during a concert at Hale a couple of years ago, but after asking around to try to find out which concert it was, I’ve come to the conclusion that it either didn’t happen or wasn’t in fact memorable!

Favourite scale?

A flat minor (not)

Tip for young players?

At the risk of sounding like a conductor:
Watch. Listen. Count.
It’s what the best orchestral players do.

Most useful bit of kit in instrument case?

Tuning fork – works a treat when my phone battery is running too low to use the app.

Most memorable stage experience?

Being part of a huge band made up of the combined forces of the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra during the cultural festival running alongside the Olympics in 1996.
We played Tchaikovsky 5, the sight and sound was amazing.

Most memorable rehearsal experience?

My first gig as a WASO casual when I was young was the Leeuwin concert with Kiri Te Kanawa.
I remember the first rehearsal with her in the old ABC studio more vividly than the performance.
She has such a commanding presence.

Hardest thing I’ve ever played?

Bartok’s music for strings, percussion and celeste

Most enjoyable piece to play?

Anything by Brahms. He wrote great bass parts. The 1st symphony if I had to single one out.

What musicians inspire you the most and why?

Young ones! I love MetSO’s young artist program – it’s a real privilege to share in young musicians’ joy of discovery and being part of their development.
