MetSO Conductor Laurissa Wyllie McCarthy

Laurissa Brooke is a composer, violinist, conductor and educator currently residing on beautiful Noongar Boodja (Perth, Western Australia).

She commenced professional life in the Middle East, performing as a violinist and conductor across Bahrain and Saudi Arabia with chamber group Octessence and the Bahrain Sinfonia.

As a composer, Laurissa has accepted multiple commissions and has created works in a diverse range of genres, including works for Orchestra, Choir, Wind Ensemble, Opera, Dance, Sound tracks, Chamber ensemble, Solo works, and Cross-cultural ensemble. Her works have been performed in Australia, Europe and the Middle East.

Laurissa was Music Director of the South Side Symphony Orchestra from 2018 - 2020 and was invited guest director for the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (Spring 2019) performing with 1st prize Cliburn International Junior winner, Shuan Hern Lee.

Building a reputation for her innovative and exciting programming, Laurissa is passionate about bringing the world of orchestral music into the 21st century by reframing the historical canon, championing living and emerging composers and engaging new audiences.

Laurissa’s musical style is vivid, communicating equal amounts of drama and empathy, while combining elements of the known and unknown.
